GROUP
COUNSELING

Group counseling is often the place where people are
introduced to the concept of talking about a problem.

Introduction

Does your company offer onsite mental health services for your expats?  Is there a trained, English-speaking mental health professional available incountry who has experienced life as an expat?  A counselor who has helped expats dealing with fear, loneliness, depression, anxiety, adjustment issues, homesickness, and a love-hate relationship with the country?  A counselor who has experienced political trauma and helped expats to cope during those times?  Where do your ex-pats turn when they need to talk openly without worry about privacy and confidentiality and how their standing in the corporation will be affected?   Is it always cost-effective to send expats home to talk to mental health professionals there,  if the expat can learn different and relevant coping skills incountry?   How does your company take care of its expats' mental health?

Counselor in Africa has a Licensed Professional Counselor from Texas, who lives in Africa and who does onsite counseling and presentations, in the Middle East or in Africa !!   Your English-speaking expats can talk about  their stress and tension and learn how to forestall or change the perceptions that may lead to family and marital tensions, depression, anxiety, substance abuse and other  behavioral issues.   There are also presentations available for your English-speaking staff and family members such as anger management, adjusting to life in a different world -- Africa and the Middle East, and the home country upon their return, communication skills, parenting skills, and living with a substance abuser.  Other subjects can be presented upon demand.

Our Mission

Life for an Expat
Life in other countries is different and exotic.  For expats, those exotic differences can have lasting negative psychological impacts.  Expats are resourceful and generally form support groups to help themselves cope with and adjust to some of the differences.  However, if the differences become too overwhelming, expats may need counseling.  Western-trained counselors are few and far between outside of America and Europe, so if there is not a local counselor available, the expat may need to find a counselor in another country.  Going to another country is expensive, time-consuming, and sometimes difficult to arrange and may require difficult travel, even if the destination is less than 100 km away.  What other alternatives are there?  The expat can return to the home country to see a counselor.  It's difficult for an expat to explain stress to a professional counselor who has only been a tourist in other countries and is unfamiliar with some of the adjustments required to live in other cultures.  The other option is repatriation, a financially and psychologically expensive choice for the corporation.  Any change in staff due to reassignments, whether scheduled or otherwise, affects the entire corporate family.  Stress is contagious and cyclic.  It may start with a staff member and go to management and to family; or it may start with an unhappy family member and result in affecting the staff and thereby affect morale and productivity.
Give your ex-pats the opportunity to talk confidentially with an expat professional counselor who can relate to the feelings they have and who is trained to help them find resolution for some of their problems!
